Tips on Cleaning a Flooded Basement

Should your home’s basement get flooded after a heavy storm, see to it that the water gets pumped out as soon as possible. You might even want to hire mold remediation experts for good measure. Here are some basic guides you can follow when removing the water from your basement.

The Right Gear
First, you’ll need a pump. You can either use a portable sump pump or a sturdy wet vacuum. Make sure that your equipment of choice is covered in a waterproof container, especially when you’re using electrically-powered equipment. Moreover, find an extension cord long enough to plug the pump somewhere that isn’t wet.

The Setup
Start laying down the submersible pump by attaching the power line to the extension cord before you put the pump in the basement. Again, make sure the electrical components will not be in any danger of making contact with the floodwater, even if they aren’t connected.

Pump and Dry
Activate the pump to start draining the water from the basement to a nearby drain outside. After doing so, make sure that any residual moisture gets removed from the structures with a dehumidifier or simple vacuum. Have the sunny day help out in the drying by taking out the drenched furniture and furnishings.
